The Ukrainian steel pipe and railway wheel company Interpipe, which produces railway wheels under the KLW brand, has developed a new railway wheel for heavy-load transport, presented at the international conference entitled ‘Rails -Wheels 2010' that was held on December 7-8 in Odessa, Ukraine.
In striving to achieve optimal wheel construction, Interpipe engineers developed new solutions to replace mechanic characteristics of wheels. For instance, Interpipe representatives advised that the optimal chemical ingredients of a new steel grade can provide increased operations and improve reliability and safety of railways wheels.
"The new wheel that we presented at the conference is a solid wheel with an S-shaped disk, which offers increased operational reliability. The wheel has been produced from a new steel grade with considerably reduced consistence of carbon and increased consistence of manganese and silicon. As a result, the wheel can carry an axel load of more than 25 mt and can travel up to 160,000 km between overhauls," said Michael Iskov, director for railway wheel sales at Interpipe.
