Indonesia’s Krakatau Steel first announced its expansion plans in January 2019. It plans to add a second 1.5 million mt per year hot strip mill in West Java with expectations to come online sometime in H2 2019. The present 2.4 million mt per year hot strip capacity will expand 62.5 percent. Half of the 2.4 million mt per year capacity only came online in December 2018.

According to recent news, Krakatau Steel is presently aiming to open the hot strip mill in June. According to company statements, Krakatua Steel seeks to capture more of the domestic demand and become a preferred option compared to imported material.

Krakatau Steel is Indonesia’s largest steelmaker. It produces HRC, CRC, plate and wire rod.
