India’s steel output up 3.7%

India's total production of finished steel for the April-March 2005 period rose 3.7% year on year to 38.33 million tons. In addition, the consumption of finished steel during the same period increased 7.2%, from 31.17 million tons to 33.40 million tons. For April-March 2005 period, total pig iron production was 3.17 million tons, a decrease of 15.8% from a year earlier. The consumption of pig iron during the same period also fell 11.12% year on year to 2.9 million tons. An increase in domestic demand saw steel exports during the twelve-month period tumble 23.9% year on year to 4.2 million tons.
