India’s ministry of steel has set up 13 task forces to identify action points for each aspect of green steel production and sustainable development of manufacturing processes, a ministry statement said on Wednesday, April 5.
It said that each of the task forces will focus on various aspects of green steel production like raw materials, technology, necessary policy support, and improved production processes.
Various stakeholders from industry, academia, government and technology will be included in these task forces, the statement said.
The ministry said that it was already pushing primary steel producers to use 50 percent of their inputs from scrapped or recycled steel by 2047 to help achieve the government target of moving towards a circular economy.
It also said that domestic steel mills must adopt low carbon emitting steelmaking processes as key raw materials like coking coal and iron ore may not be viable options in the future, which will be based on parameters of environmental sustainable goals (ESG).
