According to the data issued by India's Ministry of Steel, during April-September 2007 (i.e. first six months of Indian fiscal year) India registered a 6.6 percent increase in its finished carbon steel production year on year to 24.80 million mt. The country's production of finished carbon steel was 23.256 million mt during the April-September 2006 period.
During the April-September 2007 period, India's output of pig iron recorded a rise of 7.9 percent year on year to 2.582 million mt.
Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) produced 6.24 million mt of finished steel during the April-September 2007 period compared to 6.01 million mt during the corresponding period of last year. Meanwhile, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. (RINL) produced 1.203 million mt of finished steel during the first six months of the Indian fiscal year, compared to 1.307 million mt in the same period last year.
India's imports of finished carbon steel during April-September 2007 marked an increase of 28.2 percent year on year to 2.45 million mt compared to 1.911 million mt registered in the corresponding period of 2006. The country's exports of finished carbon steel during the period in question went up by 7.4 percent year on year to 2.60 million mt, compared to 2.42 million mt for the same period of 2006.
