India’s Ministry of Commerce has increased the number of ports eligible to handle imports of second quality and/or defective steel products, according to a ministry notification.

The ports that will be eligible to handle non-prime steel or defective and second quality steel products are Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Jawarhar Lal Nehru Port (near Mumbai) and Inland Container Depot, Delhi, the notification said.

Previously, only ports at Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata were designated to handle such import cargo.

However, import of all such cargo will mandatorily have to be accompanied with a pre-shipment certificate regarding description, quality and chemical analysis of the imports.
