A sharp rise in loading of steel and iron ore enabled government transporter Indian Railways (IR) to increase its total freight handling by five percent year on year during the April-November period of 2017, a senior Indian government official said on Thursday, December 28.
The official said that IR's handling of steel freight recorded a growth of 16.23 percent, the highest among all commodities, enabling the national transporter to post growth in the total freight handled by it. Growth of iron ore traffic handled by IR during the period was recorded at 5.16 percent year on year.
Total freight of all commodities handled by IR during the April-November period this year was recorded at 747.40 million mt, up 32.02 million mt over the corresponding period of the previous year.
