Data released by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) show that global crude steel production for June 2008 rose 5.9 percent year on year to 118.8 million metric tons.
China is again the world's largest steel producing country with crude steel production of 46.94 million metric tons in June 2008, an increase of 10.2 percent from a year earlier. Total crude steel production in the Asian region amounted to 68.3 million metric tons, up 8.7 percent on a year ago.
Germany produced 4.18 million metric tons of crude steel in June 2008, showing an increase of 2.1 percent year on year. Italy produced 2.85 million metric tons in the month in question, marking an increase of 4.8 percent compared to June 2007. Production in the UK in June was 1.22 million metric tons, down 6.2 percent year on year.
Production in Turkey in June this year stood at 2.5 million metric tons, an increase of 17.5 percent compared to June 2007.
Brazil's crude steel production in June 2008 rose 7.4 percent year on year to 2.93 million metric tons.
The US produced 8.18 million metric tons in June, registering a 0.7 percent decrease year on year.
