Data released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), previously known as the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI), show that global crude steel production for November 2008 decreased by 19 percent year on year to 89 million metric tons.
China is again the world's largest steel producing country with crude steel production of 35.2 million metric tons in November 2008, a decrease of 12.4 percent from a year earlier. Total crude steel production in the Asian region amounted to 54.1 million metric tons, down 11.4 percent on a year ago.
Germany produced 3.3 million metric tons of crude steel in November 2008, showing a decrease of 18.5 percent year on year. Italy produced 2.3 million metric tons in the month in question, marking a decrease of 16.5 percent compared to November 2007. Production in the UK in November was 834,000 metric tons, down 27.5 percent year on year. Total production in the EU-27 amounted to 13.01 million metric tons, down 24.8 percent compared to November 2007.
Production in Turkey in November this year stood at 1.812 million metric tons, a decrease of 15.4 percent compared to November 2007.
Brazil's crude steel production in November 2008 dropped 19.1 percent year on year to 2.324 million metric tons.
The US produced 5.054 million metric tons in November, registering a 38.4 percent decrease year on year.
