Euro area industrial output down 1.1 percent in May from April

In May this year, seasonally-adjusted industrial production decreased by 1.1 percent both in the euro area and in the EU-28 as compared with April, while industrial production in April had increased by 0.7 percent in both zones, month on month. In May this year compared with May 2013, industrial production increased by 0.5 percent in the euro area and by 1.1 percent in the EU-28. These figures are released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union.
 
As compared to April, in May this year the production of durable goods decreased by 1.8 percent in the euro area and by 1.6 percent in the EU-28. Meanwhile, in the given month, production of non-durable consumer goods fell by 2.2 percent in the euro area and by 1.8 percent in the EU-28, while production of intermediate goods decreased by 2.4 percent in the euro area and by 2.1 percent in the EU-28 month on month. In May of the current year, production of capital goods decreased by 0.5 percent in the euro area and by one percent in the EU-28, while production of energy increased by three percent in the euro area and by 2.2 percent in the EU-28, all month on month.  
 
Among the member states, in May the highest month-on-month increases were registered in Romania (+2.6 percent), Lithuania (+1.6 percent) and the Netherlands (+1.1 percent), and the largest decreases in Portugal (-3.6 percent), Sweden (-3.2 percent) and Denmark (-2.1 percent).

As compared to the same month of 2013, in May this year production of non-durable consumer goods increased by 1.4 percent both in the euro area and in the EU-28, while production of intermediate goods rose by 0.4 percent in the euro area and by 1.4 percent in the EU-28. In May of the current year, production of durable consumer goods decreased by 0.3 percent in the euro area and increased by 0.7 percent in the EU-28, production of energy dropped by 3.1 percent in the euro area and by 2.9 percent in the EU-28, while production of capital goods increased by 1.5 percent in the euro area and rose by 2.2 percent in the EU-28, all year on year.

Among the member states for which data are available, in May this year the largest year-on-year decreases were registered in Malta (-11.9 percent), France (-4.2 percent) and Finland (-2.9 percent), and the highest increases in Romania (+15.0 percent), Lithuania (+10.2 percent) and Hungary (+9.5 percent).
