Euro area industrial output down 0.3 percent in May from April

In May this year, seasonally-adjusted industrial production decreased by 0.3 percent in the euro area and by 0.6 percent in the EU-27, as compared with April, while production in April had increased by 0.5 and 0.3 percent month on month respectively. In May this year compared with May 2012, industrial production decreased by 1.3 percent in the euro area and by 1.6 percent in the EU-27. These figures are released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union.

As compared to April this year, in May the production of capital goods decreased by 1.5 percent in the euro area and by 1.9 percent in the EU-27, while non-durable consumer goods rose by 0.6 in the euro area and fell by 0.1 percent in the EU-27. Meanwhile, the production of intermediate goods rose by 0.4 percent in the euro area and by 0.2 percent in the EU-27. In May this year, durable consumer goods fell by 2.3 percent in the euro area and by 2.1 percent in the EU-27, while production of energy rose by 0.1 percent in the euro area and fell by 0.3 percent in the EU-27, month on month.

Among the member states for which data are available, in May this year industrial production rose in nine states, fell in 13, and remained stable in the United Kingdom, on month-on-month basis. The largest decreases were registered in Romania (-10.7%), Lithuania (-6.3%) and Sweden (-3.8%), and the highest increases in Portugal (+6.1%), Latvia (+2.2%) and Estonia (+2.0%).

As compared to the same month of 2012, in May this year production of durable goods declined by 6.2 percent in the euro area and by 5.1 percent in the EU-27, while intermediate goods fell by 2.6 percent in both zones. Non-durable consumer goods rose by 0.1 percent in the euro area and fell by 0.7 percent in the EU-27, production of energy increased by 0.2 percent in the euro area and fell by 1.9 percent in the EU-27, while production of capital goods increased by 0.9 percent in both zones, year on year.

Among the member states for which data are available, in May this year industrial production fell in 16 states and rose in seven, on year-on-year basis. The largest decreases were registered in in Ireland and Sweden (both -7.7%), Bulgaria (-6.0%) and Finland (-5.3%), and the highest increases in Lithuania (+21.6%), Estonia (+6.3%) and Portugal (+4.5%).
