After Esmark’s failed bid to buy the former US Steel plant in Serbia last month told media Tuesday that it is interested in managing the now state-owned Zelezara Smederevo mill with the potential to acquire it formally by 2016.

The announcement comes after the Serbian government expressed interest in having an outside firm manage the mill, with the goal of increasing production and saving about 5,000 jobs that would be lost if the plant is forced to shut down.
