US-based engineering and technology company Midrex Technologies, Inc. (Midrex) has announced the signing of a MoU with Egypt's largest steelmaker Ezz Steel Rebars S.A.E (Ezz Steel) and Technip Germany Gmbh (Technip) for the establishment of two Midrex Reduction Plants to be located in Egypt and Algeria.
In a statement on the issue, Midrex said that the plants will have a production capacity of 1.65 million mt per annum each, with turn key services provided by a consortium of Midrex and Technip.
Ezz Steel intends the Egyptian DRI plant to be constructed at its Ain Sokhna, Suez site for the purpose of providing additional DRI supply for its local melt shop. Under the MoU, Midrex and Technip have begun preliminary engineering and both parties plan to start construction in late 2008. Meanwhile, the location and the overall schedule of the Algerian DRI plant will be issued later on.
Ezz Steel currently has three Midrex plants operating in El Dikheila, Egypt, near Alexandria.
