Gansu Province-based Chinese steelmaker Jiuquan Iron and Steel Group (Jiugang) has announced that in 2010 it is targeting a 10 percent reduction in energy consumption in its steel production.

Accordingly, for the current year Jiugang is targeting consumption of 580 kg of standard coal per metric ton of steel produced, water consumption of 5.2 m3 per metric ton of steel, and electricity consumption of 540kWh per metric ton of steel. Based on the new targets, it is expected that the producer will make savings of 50,000 mt of standard coal per year.
