A surprise visit of the president of the board and CEO of the Brazilian steel and iron ore producer CSN, Benjamin Steinbruch, to the company’s steel plant in Volta Redonda, state of Rio de Janeiro, was the main factor behind the decision to start different repair works and update of equipment in the plant.
Steinbruch was surprised with the level of deterioration of parts of the plant, having ordered the immediate start of repairing works, including civil construction, ancillary equipment, compressed air and gases network, cleaning of buildings, refurbishing of internal roads and other services.
One of the main objectives of the works is the reduction of emissions, including a dust that recently covered the area around the plant and resulted in a fine issued against CSN by the environmental authorities of the state.
The Volta Redonda plant was inaugurated in 1946 and has received constant maintenance, but according to the local press, some areas have been neglected over the last decade, resulting in the deterioration witnessed by Steinbruch.
