Bulgaria to negotiate quota with EU

According to Bulgarian press, Bulgarian authorities are going to negotiate a duty free quota for its steel exports to the EU. The reports say, Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Nikolay Vassilev would discuss Bulgaria's progress for EU membership officials there. Vassilev is also scheduled to meet with EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy. On the other hand, it is also reported that Bulgarian Fair Competition Committee opposed to the contemplated import tariffs as it might not liked by the EU. The safeguard measures had been considered by Bulgarian government after Bulgarian metallurgists placed their request almost three months ago. The Economy Ministry responded to the demands proposing temporary 15 to 30 percent customs duty on steel imports. This will mostly affect producers from Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan who are said to threaten local steel makers.
