The Brazilian department of mineral production, DNPM, announced on Friday it has updated the registration and security norms for the country’s mining dams, including iron ore waste dams.

The updated norm was published on Friday at the country’s official gazette, Diario Oficial da Uniao (DOU).

It establishes, among other things, the level of detailing a dam’s security plan should have, sets the specifications for regular and special inspections, the period between safety reviews, as well as the emergency plans the mining dams should have.

DNPM said the updated regulation replaces the DNPM 416/12 and DNPM 526/13 ministerial orders. The updated norm should be effective in 30 days.
