BHP Billiton closes Yandi mine in wake of accident

Australian mining giant BHP Billiton has announced today that operations at its Western Australian Yandi mine site have been suspended following an accident during the night which resulted in the death of an employee of mine operator HWE Mining.

An investigation into the incident in question is underway. Operations at the mine are to remain suspended until further notice.

Since 1991 Yandi mine has been operated by HWE Mining, which annually processes over 40 million mt of iron ore at the mine.
