After more than 20 years of development efforts, in the month of October Baosteel successfully fired its furnace at Luojing which uses the Corex process.

Compared with traditional blast furnaces, the Corex furnace has the advantage of seriously reducing pollution levels. The Corex furnace uses conventional coal instead of coking coal, cuts dust and nitrogen oxide discharges by more than 90 percent and sulphur dioxide emissions by 97 percent.  The construction of the new furnace took only 25 months from the contract signing to the commencement of production - six months less than the average construction period for other similar projects around the globe.

Baosteel's new plant at Luojing is expected to produce 1.5 million mt of pig iron per year using the Corex process.
