As had been forecast, the international ferrous scrap market started the New Year in a state of high tension. The Italian scrap market has been on a steady uptrend since December, with scrap quotations pushed up either by tight supply (mainly due to the winter conditions) and high demand from steelmakers, whose scrap inventories need to be replenished after having remained almost empty for several weeks.
Italian scrap suppliers find it difficult to meet the growing demand from their customers, especially for high quality ferrous scrap grades, such as busheling and certain cut-grade scrap materials.
In December, the arrival of shipments of 74,600 mt of pig iron and 65,800 mt of scrap were reported at the port of Marghera near Venice.
