Luxembourg-headquartered steel producer ArcelorMittal has announced that it has supplied rails for the Athens Metro rail replacement project, marking the first major upgrade of the network’s infrastructure in 25 years.
According to ArcelorMittal, the Athens Metro is undertaking a large-scale rail replacement program covering key sections of its busiest lines. The company stated that its rails will be used in the modernization works aimed at improving operational reliability and safety across the network.
The project involves the replacement of 32 kilometers of track, including Line 2 from Sepolia to Dafni and Line 3 from Monastiraki to Ethniki Amyna. ArcelorMittal noted that the rails have been manufactured at its plant in Gijón, Spain.
The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, contributing to the modernization of Athens’ urban transport infrastructure.
