ArcelorMittal launches chromium-free coated steels for construction industry

Global steel giant ArcelorMittal has announced that it has launched a range of chromium-free organic coated steels for the construction industry.
 
The corrosion inhibitor strontium chromate has been used by the construction industry in coated steels for decades, but will be banned in 2016 under the European REACH regulatory framework (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical Substances), which came into force on June 1, 2007. After long-standing research programs, ArcelorMittal Flat Carbon Europe has managed to develop new effective, neutral and durable substitutes for corrosion-inhibiting.
 
According to ArcelorMittal's statement, in 2011 alone the company invested $306 million in researching and developing new steel products, solutions and processes to support a low carbon world, demonstrating the sustainable advantages available through product innovation.
 
Organic coated steel is widely used in the building industry, in façades, roofing, cappings, ceilings and lighting, ensuring that the product can withstand the effects of weather and corrosives.
