Luxembourg-registered steel group ArcelorMittal has announced the commissioning of new equipment designed to significantly reduce sulphur emissions from the Dunkerque site coking plant in France. The new facility required nineteen months’ work and represents an investment of €26 million. The sulphur dioxide (SO2) content of the coke oven gas will be reduced by 80 percent.

This major investment is in addition to the €10 million invested on average each year at the Dunkerque site to reduce the plant’s environmental impact but also to improve the plant's energy performance. As part of its energy efficiency project, the ArcelorMittal Dunkerque plant has also achieved energy consumption savings of €3.4 million between the beginning of 2014 and the end of 2015.
