Having increased its prices since August 18, the major EAF-based steel producer in Japan, Tokyo Steel, has announced a decrease for its local scrap procurement prices for its Tahara and Nagoya yards. The downward revision was a mere JPY 1,000/mt and has had no impact on the general range of Tokyo Steel’s prices, with only the yards with the highest prices changing.

Tokyo Steel’s general range for H2 grade scrap is still at JPY 48,000-51,000/mt ($334-354/mt) depending on the mill, decreased by $1/mt on the upper end due to the fluctuation of Japanese yen-US dollar exchange rate. Currently, the Okayama, Kyushu and Utsunomiya plants have the same scrap purchase prices and represent the higher end of prices. The lowest prices are still at the Takamatsu yard.

Tokyo Steel’s general range for shindachi scrap is currently at JPY 50,000-53,000/mt ($348-368/mt). Dollar-based prices have decreased by $1/mt, again only on the upper end. All prices in question are delivered and effective as of September 22. Exchange rate fluctuations are taken into consideration when calculating the dollar-based price changes.
