The leading Japanese EAF steel producer Tokyo Steel has announced its new prices for its domestic scrap purchases, announcing a further rise of JPY 500/mt both for H2 scrap and shindachi grades. Despite the reduction announced by the Japanese producer, its dollar-based prices have remained stable as the Japanese yen has gained strength against the US dollar. With the Chinese New Year holiday starting, buyers in Japan’s traditional export markets are expected to be absent during the holiday period, which supports the decline in the local Japanese scrap market.
Tokyo Steel’s general range for H2 grade scrap price has declined by JPY 500/mt to JPY 39,000-41,000/mt ($253-265/mt) depending on the mill. The dollar-based quotations have remained stable since January 24.
Shindachi scrap prices of Tokyo Steel are down by JPY 500/mt to JPY 40,500-42,000/mt ($262-272/mt) delivered. The prices shared in the table below are effective as of January 2
