Tokyo Steel keeps local scrap purchase prices mostly stable on yen basis

The leading Japanese EAF-based steel producer Tokyo Steel has announced its new prices for domestic scrap purchases, for the first time since late October. The producer has mostly kept its prices stable, except in the Kyushu region where it has cut its price slightly. The announcement came after the Kanto tender, in which the export price dropped by $13/mt on FAS basis.

Tokyo Steel’s general range for H2 grade scrap remains stable at JPY 40,000-41,500/mt ($263-273/mt) depending on the mill. However, due to the appreciation of the Japanese yen against the US dollar, the dollar-based equivalent has moved up by $2/mt. The Japanese yen-US dollar exchange rate was at $1 = JPY 153.18 on October 29, it now stands at JPY 152.15. In the Kyushu region, the price has been cut by JPY 1,000/mt, moving down from $271/mt to $265/mt.

Shindachi scrap prices of Tokyo Steel are still at JPY 41,000-43,000/mt ($269-283/mt) delivered. The dollar-based prices have moved up by $1-2/mt from the levels announced on October 29. In the Kyushu region, shindachi scrap prices have been cut by JPY 1,000/mt, moving down from $277/mt to $272/mt. The new price levels are effective as of December 12.

Meanwhile, Tokyo Bay FAS-based prices for H2 grade scrap are currently at JPY 42,500/mt ($279/mt). This level shows that FOB prices are now at JPY 43,500/mt ($288/mt) for this grade. In the Kanto export tender, the FAS-based price announced today translates to JPY 43,739/mt FOB or $287/mt FOB.

Tokyo Bay HS scrap prices are standing at JPY 47,000/mt ($309/mt) FAS, while shindachi scrap prices are at JPY 45,000/mt ($298/mt) FAS.
