Slight uptrend in Chinese scrap prices

During the week ending September 25, scrap prices have increased slightly in some local markets in China with the average price of HMS scrap in major markets of China now standing at RMB 2,636/mt ($418/mt), with an increase of $3/mt compared to the previous week. Local steel scrap prices in China can be viewed in the SteelOrbis price reports section.

Increases observed in iron ore and finished steel prices have caused higher market activity level in China, bringing up scrap prices. Moreover, with the approach of the National Day holiday (October 1-7), steel mills are not expected to reduce their scrap order volume in order to sustain their normal production levels. Consequently, scrap prices in China are expected to continue trending up in the near future, despite some concerns.
