Local Turkish merchant bar prices in the Izmir and Denizli regions have decreased by TRY 230-240/mt ($15/mt) amid the negative sentiment in the import scrap segment, while raising by TRY 30/mt in the Karabuk and Iskenderun regions in order to offset the currency fluctuations. Sources report a few merchant bar producers are offering sizeable discounts, of $10-20/mt, for serious buyers to generate sales in line with the rapid currency fluctuations and the pessimistic sentiment in the import scrap segment.
Most merchant bar sellers are offering for October delivery and only limited tonnages are available from stocks. Sources report that official HEA/HEB (100-200 mm, standard) prices have remained unchanged at $1,025/mt ex-works over the same period. It is worth mentioning that Kardemir closed its merchant bar sales yesterday afternoon and succeeded selling around 45,000-50,000 mt of merchant bar at $910-1,050/mt ex-works depending on the size and quality. The main reasons are the aggressive pricing policy and advantageous payment terms.
