Turkish mill are struggling to reflect higher import scrap prices in their local rebar prices due to the ongoing currency fluctuations and sluggish demand. In addition, most local traders seem to be applying aggressive pricing in order to generate cash. As a result, Turkish official domestic dollar-based rebar offers and workable prices from mills in the Marmara and Izmir regions, including İçdaş, have fallen by $5/mt to $590-610/mt ex-works and by $5/mt on the higher end to $590-605/mt ex-works, respectively, as compared to May 11. One Izmir-based mill has set its official rebar price at TRY 32,200/mt ($590/mt) ex-works today, May 14, unchanged in the local currency and down by $2/mt on US dollar basis due to the ongoing currency fluctuations over the same period.
An Iskenderun region-based mill set its official rebar price earlier today at TRY 32,300/mt ($592/mt) ex-works, up by TRY 300/mt ($4/mt) compared to May 11, and later increased its rebar price by a further TRY 200/mt ($4/mt) in the afternoon to TRY 32,500/mt ($596/mt) ex-works. The main reasons for the rebar price increase in Iskenderun are the ongoing currency fluctuations and the relatively quick reaction to higher import scrap prices. However, local buyers are mostly postponing their purchases due to the unclear financial situation in the country and high interest rates for bank loans. Sources report that several Iskenderun-based rolling mills have set their rebar prices today, for serious buyers and cash payment, at TRY 31,800-32,000/mt ($583-587/mt) ex-warehouse, unchanged in Turkish liras while only falling by $1/mt on US dollar basis, over the same period.
One Iskenderun-based re-roller has closed its rebar sales until Monday, June 1.
Currently, local 12 mm rebar prices in the spot market in Turkey are in the range of TRY 31,900-32,700/mt ($585-600/mt) ex-warehouse, down by TRY 100/mt ($2-3/mt) compared to May 11.
