Local Chinese longs prices soften amid weak demand despite output cuts, stimulus measures

During the past week ending December 8, average Chinese domestic rebar and wire rod prices have edged down amid decreasing rebar futures prices and low transaction activities as weak demand in the market has outweighed the influence of lower production and awaited stimulus measures.

The average rebar price has edged down by RMB 13/mt ($1.8/mt) compared to December 1, while the average 6.5 mm HPB 300 wire rod price has also declined by RMB 13/mt ($1.8/mt). Rebar prices have decreased by RMB 10/mt ($1.4/mt) compared to the previous trading day, December 5.

During the given week, rebar and wire rod prices in the Chinese domestic market have seen slight declines even despite reduced outputs, as demand has been sluggish. On December 8, the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee held a meeting to analyze and study economic work for 2026, stating that China will adhere to the principles of pursuing progress while ensuring stability and improving both quality and effectiveness, and will continue to implement a more proactive fiscal policy alongside a moderately loose monetary policy. The ferrous metal futures market responded calmly to the meeting on Monday.

As of December 8, rebar futures at Shanghai Futures Exchange are standing at RMB 3,123/mt ($441/mt), decreasing by RMB 11/mt ($1.6/mt) or 0.35 percent since December 1, while down 1.3 percent compared to the previous trading day, December 5.

Several cities in Hebei Province have decided to initiate a level II emergency response as of 12:00 on December 8, aiming to alleviate pollution, which may reduce steel outputs and bolster prices to a certain degree. However, it is thought that rebar and wire rod prices in the Chinese domestic market will edge down by further slight margins in the coming week.
