US domestic cold rolled coil (CRC) producers rolled out a series of price increase announcement letters to customers in the past seven days but at this point, US domestic spot market prices remain unchanged. The most commonly reported range continues to hold at $28-$29 cwt. ($617-$639/mt or $560-$580/nt) ex-Midwest mill.
Sources close to SteelOrbis have reported they have yet to see any price firming which has some wondering if the second increase will be accepted. For now, it’s a watch and wait situation, according to sources, who point out inventories remain heavy and US import tonnages remain high. According to the June 16 data from the Steel Import Monitoring Analysis System (SIMA), May global import tonnages of CRC came in at 174,850 mt (license data), which follows 210,417 mt (census data) that arrived at US ports in May.
