US HRC prices tick upward

The most commonly heard spot price transaction range for US domestic hot rolled coil (HRC) have firmed by $0.50 cwt ($11/mt or $10/nt) on the bottom end of the average spot market price transaction range since our last report a week ago, which brings current prices up to $31.50-$32.50 cwt. ($694-$717/mt or $630-$650/nt) ex-mill.

The uptick comes a little more than a week after US domestic flat rolled steel mills announced they would be raising prices by $1.50 cwt. ($33/mt or $30/nt), effective with all new orders.

Market players have told SteelOrbis they believe there is still room for prices to firm due to upticks in mills’ input costs.  Combined with renewed demand from US domestic pipe mills and the decreased availability of imports, sources expect US HRC prices will continue trending strong.
