SteelOrbis sources throughout the US have said that although domestic mills continue to quote at higher levels, that prices on all grades of flat rolled steel, including US domestic HDG and Galvalume coil, are fluid.
“If you ask the mills to give mills to give you a quote, of course they’re going to quote at higher levels,” a source said, noting that mills are bracing for the impact of COVID-19. “But if you show up with an order in hand and you ask for a better number, you’re likely to get it.”
Another source agreed, noting that one major producer, who “never gives us a deal” had offered “a significant discount on a 500-ton order. We didn’t take it because we don’t need to buy anything right now, and we’re also wondering if the price is going to be even lower than that in a month.”
However, sources agree that if you need small tonnages immediately, “you’re likely going to have to pay through the nose for it.”
