Local demand for coated steel has improved in Turkey since the end of last week and so re-rollers have increased their prices by a further $10-20/mt as of today, June 15. In addition, domestic hot rolled coil (HRC) producers remain bullish, in addition to the positive mood in the coated flat steel segment, which encourages buyers to restock more actively. "There were rumors about $470/mt ex-works offers for HRC last week and buyers have accepted these rumors as a signal for further price increases in the Turkish coated steel market. Also, scrap prices increased last week and have supported this belief. As a result, we have made a good amount of sales and started this week also with good demand," a re-roller told SteelOrbis.
On the export side, however, prices have not changed due to low demand and competitive import offers to the EU from alternative sellers. "We have heard lower offers from Asia, below $600/mt CFR even, and it is possible to find these price levels also in southern Europe. These offers make it impossible to increase prices and buyers are always asking for discounts: they find our prices high," another re-roller said. As a result, Turkey’s coated steel sellers prefer to be not aggressive in exports, focusing on the livelier local market.
