Turkey’s Jan-Aug 2004 white goods sales exceed 2003 figure
White goods domestic demand in Turkey continued its strong growth in August. Based on the data released by White Goods Industrial Association (BESD), August domestic white goods sales including four items (refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens and washing machines) surged by 79% to 492'749 units from 275'558 units recorded in the same period of last year. However, total demand for four major product categories was 7% lower compared to one month ago. In the first eight months of the year, total domestic sales reached 3.3 million units with a rise of 75% compared to the corresponding period of last year. In addition, this figure was 8% higher than total white goods demand registered for the full year 2003. August data indicates that white goods domestic demand will break record in 2004. This upward trend is attributed to the economic growth, favourable prices and financing terms as well as positive consumer sentiment. White goods exports amounted to 4.7 million units in Jan-Aug 2004 period, up by 27% on an annual basis. On the other hand, August exports dropped by 1% from a year earlier. Imports were also up by 33% to 286'519 units in the first eight months of the year. Total production reached 7.7 million units in Jan-Aug period with an increase of 43% compared to 5.4 million units recorded in the same period of last year.
