Indian steel production rises by 6.4%

In April-August period, Indian steel production grew by 6.4% over the same period 2002. Pig iron production amounted to 2.23 million tons, up by 2.3% compared to 2.18 million tons recorded in the corresponding period last year. India exported 2.2 million tons of steel with a 45.8% increase in the same period. Steel Authority of India (SAIL) exported 83'000 tons of steel in August while Rashtriya Ispat Nigam exported 45'000 tons. During the aforementioned period, finished steel consumption was up by 2.1% to 11.8 million tons. Also, consumption of pig iron indicated an increase of 2.97%.
