Voestalpine Steel Service Center Romania, part of Austrian group Voestalpine and the newest member of the Voestalpine steel division, has commissioned a steel processing center in Giurgiu, Romania, according to media reports.

The company invested approximately €20 million in the steel center with an annual output capacity of 130,000 mt of processed steel sheets, with a possible capacity expansion after the financial year 2016-17. Construction started in 2010 with funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the government of Romania.

The raw material will be supplied by the Voestalpine smelter at Linz, Austria, and will be used to produce steel sheets of the best quality for European partners in the automotive industry such as Ford and Renault, for the manufacturing of electric household appliances, and for the energy industry.

While 30 percent of the production capacity will be destined for the domestic market, the remaining 70 percent will be exported to markets such as Bulgaria, Serbia and Turkey.
