Vietnamese steel producer Hoa Phat Group has put its new 300-ton basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter into operation at its Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 plant, according to local media reports.

Entailing an investment of VND 85 trillion ($3.4 billion), the Dung Quat 2 plant will have a high quality hot rolled coil (HRC) production capacity of 5.6 million mt per year, catering to the needs of several industries including automotive, household appliances and containers. However, it will take four years for the plant to reach its full capacity, with its commercial production scheduled for start-up from the end of this year.

Meanwhile, the blast furnace No. 1 will be commissioned next year with 50 percent capacity, equivalent to 1.4 million mt of steel. By 2026, the blast furnace No. 2 will begin operations at 50 percent capacity, while the capacity of the blast furnace No. 1 will rise to 80 percent.
