US steel production for the week ended July 2, 2005

Domestic steel mills produced 1.89 million tons for the week ended July 2, a year-on-year decline of 9.2 percent, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute. US steel mills utilized 82.3 percent of their capacity, a week-to-week increase from 81.9 percent. Year-to-date, 52.4 million tons of steel have been produced, an almost five percent decline from 2004’s 55.09 million tons. Regionally, steel production in the Northwest Indiana/Chicago area was down 3'000 tons to 407’000. In the Southern District, the nation’s largest steel producing area, output remained solid with 555’000 tons.
