US steel imports down 3.8 percent in June 2026 from May

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US monthly steel imports in June this year decreased by 3.8 percent from May and were down 6.6 percent year on year to total 1.90 million mt. In terms of value, US steel imports in June totaled $1.9 billion, compared to $2 billion in May and $2.1 billion in June 2025.

Top sources for US steel imports in June include: South Korea with 382,499 mt, Canada with 266,718 mt, Brazil with 221,881 mt, and Mexico with 173,736 mt.

By product group, semi-finished imports totaled 559,708 mt in June, up from 547,431 mt in May and up from 523,303 mt in June 2025. Flat product imports totaled 525,116 mt in June, down from 529,400 mt in May and down from 629,438 mt in June 2025. Long product imports totaled 370,427 mt in June, down from 524,922 mt in May and down from 446,704 mt in June last year. Pipe and tube imports amounted to 375,427 mt in June, up from 305,676 mt in May and up from 364,864 mt in June 2025.

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, the share of imports in the US steel market was estimated at 17 percent in June and at 16 percent the first six months this year.
