US raw steel output down four percent year-on-year

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported Monday that during the week ended November 3, 2007, raw steel production in the US increased by 0.5  percent from the previous week, while year-to-date steel production was down four percent from the same period of last year.

For the week ended November 3, US steel production rose to 2.100 million net tons (nt) from 2.088 million nt produced the previous week.

YTD net tonnage as of November 3 registered at 90.0 million nt with mills working at an average capability utilization rate of 86.0 percent. This compares to YTD net tonnage of 93.8 million nt on November 3, 2006 with an average capability utilization rate of 89.5 percent.

According to AISI, the production capability for the fourth quarter of 2007 is approximately 31.3 million nt, as opposed to 30.7 million nt for the same period of last year, and 30.1 million nt for the third quarter of 2007.
