US iron and steel scrap exports down 21 percent in Sept from Aug

According to the Mineral Industry Survey released by the US Geological Survey (USGS), stocks of imported and domestic scrap in the US at the end of September 2012 amounted to 3.6 million mt, slightly up compared to the end of August.

Exports of iron and steel scrap from the US in the month of September decreased to 1.64 million mt, down 21 percent compared to August. Turkey was the leading country of destination, with 656,000 mt, accounting for 40 percent of total export tonnages, followed by South Korea with 254,000 mt and Taiwan with 238,000 mt.

US imports of iron and steel scrap in September this year were down slightly month on month, amounting to 261,000 mt. Canada was the leading country of origin, accounting for 84 percent of the total imported tonnage, exporting 220,000 mt of iron and steel scrap to the US in the given month.
