US domestic steel production sees an increase

As was reported this week by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), during the week ended November 25, 2006, raw steel production in the US increased by 1.5 percent to 1.809 million net tons (nt). The previous week, the US had registered a production figure of 1.782 million nt of raw steel. US steel production for the week ended November 25 was down 10.1 percent from the 2.013 million net tons produced during the same week of last year. The Southern district recorded the highest raw steel production figures for the week ended November 25, 2006, producing 580,000 nt, followed by the Indiana/Chicago district at 456,000 nt. The district that produced the least raw steel was the Lake Erie district, with 79,000 nt. Year-to-date net tonnage as of November 25 was 96.0 million nt, compared to YTD net tonnage of 92.7 million nt on November 25, 2005.
