The major Ukrainian steelmakers have released their preliminary production results for the first six months of 2009.
Accordingly, during the given period Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich) reduced its finished steel product output by 50.4 percent and its pipe production by 71 percent year on year, to 1.338 million mt and 17,200 mt respectively. Ilyich's crude steel production decreased by 46.8 percent, its pig iron output by 42.4 percent and its agglomerate production by 48 percent, year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 1.897 million, 1.609 million and 3.602 million.
During the first six months of 2009, Azovstal decreased its crude steel output by 40.6 percent to 1.881 million mt, its pig iron production by 38.5 percent to 1.610 million mt and its finished steel production by 39 percent to 1.759 million mt, all compared to the corresponding period of 2008. Meanwhile, Azovstal's agglomerate production saw a slight decrease of two percent to 956,000 mt, while its metallurgical coke output registered a drop of 25.1 percent to 926,100 mt year on year.
In January-June 2009, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih produced 2.114 million mt of finished steel - down 38.7 percent, 2.293 million mt of crude steel - down 41.5 percent, 2.025 million mt of pig iron - down 41.7 percent, and 3.661 million mt of agglomerate - down 36.4 percent, all compared to the first six months of 2008.
During the period in question, Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) reduced its pig iron production by 30 percent year on year, its crude steel production by 32.8 percent, its finished steel production by 32 percent, and its agglomerate production by 14.5 percent. The respective figures in metric tons were 1.6 million, 1.768 million, 1.637 million and 2.130 million.
During the first half of 2009, Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (EMZ) decreased its pig iron production by 28.9 percent to 1.019 million mt, its crude steel production by 23 percent to 1.156 million mt, its finished steel output by 26.6 percent to 1.086 million mt, and its agglomerate production by 11.8 percent to 1.025 million mt, all compared with the same period last year.
In January-June 2009, Makeevsk MZ did not produce any crude steel or pig iron, and registered a 46 percent decrease in its finished steel output to 302,000 mt.
