Ukrainian steel production down heading into spring

Major Ukrainian steelmakers saw their production decrease during the first two months of 2005. Mariupol-based Ilyich, the country's second largest metal company, decreased its rolled metal output by 0.3% to 909'000 tons, its steel production by 3.8% to 1.124 million tons, cast iron production by 10.2% to 818'000 tons, and sinter production by 5.8% to 2.214 million tons. Elsewhere, Donbas Group's Alchevsk-based Alchevsky –Ukraine's leading thin stainless sheet, special steel and steel shot producer– decreased its rolled metal production by 2.3% to 470'000 tons, steel production by 1.1% to 612'000 tons, sinter production by 8.2% to 747'000 tons and cast iron production by 1.7% to 476'000 tons.
