According to the provisional foreign trade statistics compiled by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) and the Turkish Undersecretariat of Customs, in September this year Turkey's iron and steel exports totaled $567.11 million, decreasing by 71.6 percent year on year, but up 9.41 percent over August, while exports of articles of iron or steel declined by 41.3 percent compared to September 2008 and were down 12.84 percent month on month, amounting to a value of $344.15 million.
In the first nine months of the year, Turkey's iron and steel exports totaled $5.66 billion, down 56.3 percent from $12.95 billion in the same period last year, while exports of articles of iron or steel amounted to $3.27 billion, down 26.8 percent year on year from $4.47 billion.
Meanwhile in September Turkey's iron and steel imports totaled $1.22 billion, decreasing by 39 percent year on year but up 30.28 percent over August, while imports of articles of iron or steel declined by 30.8 percent compared to September 2008 and were up 8.67 percent month on month, reaching $125.98 million.
In the January-September period of the current year, Turkey's iron and steel imports totaled $8.07 billion, down 59.7 percent year on year from $20 billion, while imports of articles of iron or steel amounted to $1.08 billion, down 38.8 percent year on year from $1.76 billion.
