Turkey’s scrap imports down 15.6 percent in Jan from Dec

According to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in January this year Turkey's steel scrap imports fell 15.55 percent compared to December and were up 0.8 percent compared to the same month of 2012, amounting to 1.5 million metric tons. The country's scrap imports in January this year constituted the lowest monthly volume recorded since January last year.

According to the data released by TUIK, Turkey's scrap import value was $596 million in January, down 8.4 percent compared to January 2012. In January this year, the average price of Turkey's steel scrap imports stood at $394/mt, falling approximately $40/mt compared to the average of $433/mt recorded in the same month of 2012.

In January of the current year, Turkey imported 800,000 mt of steel scrap from the EU, up 0.6 percent year on year and falling 19.4 percent compared to the previous month, 517,786 mt of scrap from North America, rising 76.1 percent year on year and up 34.2 percent compared to December 2012, and 112,586 mt of scrap from the CIS, decreasing by 63.15 percent year on year and down 65.1 percent month on month.
