Turkey's scrap imports down 1.3 percent in Jan-Apr

In the first four months of this year, Turkey's scrap imports decreased by 1.3 percent to 6.15 million mt, valued at $2.35 billion, down five percent, both year on year, according to the report released by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association (TCUD). In the given period, Turkey's domestic scrap supply volume decreased by 2.4 percent to 3.52 million mt, while scrap consumption amounted to 9.67 million mt, down 1.7 percent, both year on year.

Meanwhile in the first four months, in Turkey scrap consumption by electric arc furnaces, which produced 7.85 million mt of steel, totaled 8.95 million mt, down 1.3 percent and scrap usage by blast furnaces, which produced 3.21 million mt of steel, amounted to 718,000 mt., down 5.8 percent, both on year-on-year basis.

In the given period, Turkey's scrap imports from European countries increased by 6.6 percent year on year to 3.34 million mt, while scrap imports from the US contracted by 33.5 percent to 1.31 million mt, and Turkey's scrap imports from CIS countries surged by 91.5 percent to 1.01 metric tons, all on year-on-year basis. Turkey's top scrap source in the given period was the US, followed by Russia, the UK, Belgium, Romania, the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany.
