According to the monthly statistics released by the Turkish Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD), in the first six months of 2009 Turkey's motor vehicle output totaled 400,378 units, decreasing by 45 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, the country's passenger car production amounted to 245,929 units in the first half of the current year, retreating by 35 percent year on year.
In the first six months of 2009, passenger car sales in Turkey reached 189,696, increasing by 15.36 percent year on year, while light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 15.16 percent year on year to 83,661 units.
In June 2009, Turkey's total motor vehicle production came to 89,863 units - down 25.06 percent, passenger car output totaled 53,577 units - down 15.11 percent, commercial vehicle production reached 34,851 units - down 35.71 percent, and tractor production amounted to 1,435 units - down 44.74 percent, all compared to June 2008.
In June 2009, passenger car sales in Turkey reached 41,019 units - up 42.8 percent, while light commercial car sales amounted to 20,048 - up 13.91, both compared to same month of 2008.
On June 16, 2009, the Turkish government extended the Special Consumption Tax (OTV) reduction for products of various industrial sectors, including automobiles, until the end of September 2009. The initial decision to reduce this tax was taken on March 16 this year. Since then motor vehicle sales in Turkey have been on an upward trend.
