Turkey’s industrial production index sees record drop in Feb 2009

According to the data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜIK), in February 2009 Turkey's monthly industrial production index continued its downward trend for the eighth successive month, decreasing by 23.7 percent to a record low of 84.8, compared to February 2008.

According to the release, Turkey's industrial production, which had declined by 21.3 percent to 88.6 in January 2009, continued its sharp downward trend in February. In the sub-sector levels of industry, the highest decrease in February 2009 was registered in capital goods, down 44.8 percent from the same month of the previous year.

Meanwhile, the highest decrease in the manufacturing index in February 2009 was realized in the manufacture of vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers by 58.7 percent over the same month of previous year. This was followed by manufacture of radio, TV, and communication equipment, down 41.6 percent, and by manufacture of office accounting-computing equipment, down 36.4 percent, compared to February 2008.
